Prioritising carbon reduction during construction

We’ve made the reduction of lifecycle emissions during construction a high priority. To reduce the embodied carbon of our properties, we are measuring, reducing and mitigating emissions.

Measure
We start by having a holistic and precise understanding of the carbon emissions of each of our buildings, based on data gathered through detailed life cycle analysis.

Reduce
Armed with these facts, we develop effective approaches to reduce the embodied carbon emissions in our built environment, such as innovative building designs that reduce emissions, and replacing high-emission materials with lower-carbon ones. This covers procurement policies that favour locally-sourced products, and creating partnerships to reduce emissions across our value chains, collaborating with our suppliers and business partners. At Goodman, our commitment by 2030, is to reduce absolute scope 1+2 GHG emissions by 70% and Goodman CE’s relative scope 3 emissions — including those related to embodied carbon — by 55%, from a 2019 base year. We also commit to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.

Mitigate beyond the value chain
Our mitigation activities – in our own operations and beyond the value chain – are aligned with recognised international standards and initiatives accredited by The International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA).

Embedding circular thinking across the life cycle of our infrastructure

Embedding circular thinking in our activities means that we strive to continually reduce waste and pollution, and maximise the use of recyclable materials. We also take action to minimise our impact on natural resources — from the land we choose, to the materials we use and reuse.

We don’t waste “waste”

One person’s waste is another person’s treasure. Here’s a glimpse into our waste management approach:

• Since 2021 we have been tracking all waste from construction and deconstruction at our CE developments and refurbishments.
• Since 2022 we’ve adapted our processes to progress toward diverting 100% of our waste (by weight) from landfill during the deconstruction phase.
• By 2030, our ambition is to reach circularity during deconstruction for all brownfield developments. To achieve this, since 2021 we’ve been piloting exciting initiatives
